How safe and effective is Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy?
“Shock Wave Therapy” or simply "ESWT" is an FDA approved "non-invasive or no incision" treatment for both “plantar fasciitis", commonly associated with "heel spurs” and “lateral epicondylitis" or "tennis elbow”. ESWT is also used to successfully treat achilles tendons, knees and shoulders. Shockwave therapy has a success rate of approximately 85% which is, as good, if not better, than its invasive counter parts. However, ESWT is perferable in the long run because of the greatly reduced risk of scarring or infection. Additionally, it must be noted that the success rate for insertional achilles tendonitis is well over 90%.
